‘The Last Witch Hunter’ | Magic never sounded so good

The Last Witch Hunter

All I’m going to do is say Vin Diesel, end of story so go see the film now. Can you imagine if that really was the entire review? In all seriousness let’s take a moment to talk about Vin. He’s one of the most popular action stars of the last decade with hits like The Chronicles of Riddick series, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Fast & Furious franchise. He’s become the epitome of cool and manliness; I feel like he could make a movie about air and it would sell millions just because of who he is. Now all of that said it definitely makes sense that his next endeavor would be into the realm of the magic. Can he pull it off? Does the movie make the grade? Am I asking you too many questions in a single review? I’ll stop it with the question game and get to the good stuff. Review, activate!!

This review is going to be a tad bit different than the others because I feel like the tale is always the same. There are always witches and witch hunters. The struggle between good and evil. The fight that will never end for the fate of humanity. It’s been done countless times in movies like Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Van Helsing. Monsters will always be monsters so instead let’s talk about how this movie sets itself apart from the rest. The first difference is that the entire story isn’t all about revenge. Typically the stories are, but in The Last Witch Hunter it almost seems like he’s hunting them because he knows he is the only one that can. Even later on when some events cause him to, somewhat, seek revenge it quickly turns into a story about the past. Kaulder goes on a search for his memories and his past so that he can save the present. It was a huge twist to have the movie focus less on the witches and magic. I went in thinking it was going to be this movie filled with over-the-top action scenes, what I got instead was a movie that showed me not to judge a book by its cover.

Is it movie of the millennium? I can say with a clear conscious that it isn’t, however I would highly recommend it. Vin Diesel makes hunting witches look cool and at the same time shows a different side of his acting abilities. If you’re tired of the same magic that you’ve been used to then I highly recommend The Last Witch Hunter.
