Newport Polo Is The Sport of Kings for Just Us Folk

Newport Polo

Nothing lowers blood pressure, soothes agitation, and infuses calm like a drive along a quiet country lane. The canopy of tall trees casting playful shadows across the road, ancient rocks stacked artistically into purposeful walls, and green fields dotted with peaceful grazers. Approaching the Glen Farm in Portsmouth is near nirvana for just about anyone.

But after you pass the rocky gates and patina-layered farm buildings, there is a distant view of treasured horses being walked out to a field – flags flapping in the steady breeze. You get a sense that something is going down.
It is the royal equivalent of a rumble: Sharks v Jets on horseback.

This is Newport Polo.

Newport Polo, host of the Newport International Polo Series XXIV, is home to America’s first polo club, established in 1876. The polo matches are one of Newport’s grandest and most popular traditions. Generations of residents and tourists, young and old, in singles or in crowds, have participated in the fevered camaraderie.

Join the thousands of spectators who cheer on riders of international teams, as well as teams representing major US cities, playing against the home team every Saturday, June thru August starting at 5 p.m. and in September at 4 p.m.

The International Polo Grounds are located at historic Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road (Rte. 138) in Portsmouth. Food and beverages are available for purchase, or pack your picnic and come watch the sunset on a glamorous brawl.
