Marvel Villains: Top Comic Book Stories

Marvel Comic Villains

By: Mark Lynch

A hero just isn’t a good hero without his antagonist. It means almost nothing when a hero beats a weak villain. Now, when a hero beats a guy who is actually worth a damn, you can’t help but be impressed. The good thing about comic books is that sometimes the villains actually win. Granted, the heroes come back and win, but not without them systematically being beaten or taken down.

5. Red Skull “Kills” Captain America

After over sixty years, Red Skull gets his victory over Captain America.

Issue: Captain America 1-25

Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Steve Epting

Why It Rocked:
Very rarely does a villain see his plans completed. Red Skull was supposedly dead and still found a way to orchestrate the systematic take down and death of Captain America from beyond the grave.

4. Sabretooth Gains Control
Sabretooth goes from a hired thug to the kingpin of crime.

Issues: Wolverine 2 and 300-304
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artists: Renato Guedes, Goran Sudzuka, Ron Garney, Adam Kubert, Steven Sanders, Billy Tan

Why It Rocked:
Sabretooth completed his goal of becoming the kingpin of crime in the western hemisphere and he made his arch nemesis Logan help him do it without Logan even knowing it. Sabretooth also destroyed major parts of Logan’s life to boot.

3. Norman Osborn runs The Avengers

One of the last people who should be put in charge WAS put in charge.

Issues: Dark Avengers 1-16
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Mike Deodato

Why it Rocked:
Norman “I’m the crazy Green Goblin” Osborn was put in charge of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” The Avengers. They put a guy who throws women off bridges while dressed as a goblin and laughs loud and hysterically in charge of protecting the world. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he dressed super villains up as known heroes.

2. The Superior Spider-Man
If you can’t beat them, become them.

Issues: Spider-Man 600 and Superior Spider-Man 1-31
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli

Why It Rocked:
It’s one thing to beat your arch nemesis, it’s something different all together when you become them, take their life over, and are possibly better at being them than they are. Otto Octavius is only bested in winning by the person at number one.

1. The REAL Age of Ultron
Word of advice, never create something designed to become smarter than you and will ultimately destroy the world.

Issues: Avengers 12.1 and Age of Ultron 1-10
Writers: Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch

Why it Rocked:
Ultron won plain and simple. The world was destroyed and taken over by Ultron and only a handful of heroes remained and even they had given up. While The Avengers “Age of Ultron” movie was good, what Ultron did in the movie was nothing compared to what Ultron did in the comics.
