‘I’ll Be Gone in the Dark’ is a true crime nightmare

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara is a true crime book that is not for the faint of heart. It took me a long time to read it due to the heavy nature of the crimes but the nightmarish crimes were as much fascinating as they were disturbing. Trigger warning: rape, torture, and murder.

This serial rapist terrorized northern California for decades and then made his way to the southern part of the state. Through Michelle’s research across multiple jurisdictions and with armchair detectives she was consumed by the case and finding the killer. The way she describes the murders through case files and interviews will leave readers feeling disturbed and somewhat traumatized themselves but its a story that needed to be told and put under the spotlight. Now because of Michelle’s research and drive the FBI has joined the investigation and launched a nationwide search for new leads.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is available for purchase and was published by HarperCollins Publishers. Michelle McNamara’s fascination with true crime began after a young girl was killed a half a mile from her family home when she was only a teenager. She died before this book was able to be finished but with the help of her husband and colleagues this disturbing story was able to be told and hopefully one day will be solved.
