A Place To Start Reading | Top Comic Book Stories

Written By: Mark Lynch

When Marvel’s big event Secret War ended, the new universe changed. Some people from the Ultimate Universe joined the new universe, some died, some people switched teams, and a lot of people died. But what’s more important is that Marvel has stepped their game up and put out some phenomenal comic books in the last few months. Now is a perfect time to jump right in and pick a place to start. I have five suggestions for you.

1. Heroes for Hire, how can I help you?
Danny Rand and his best friend Luke Cage are BACK as Heroes for Hire!!!!…well, Danny is hoping they’re back.

Comic Attack

Series: Power Man and Iron Fist
Writer: David F. Walker
Artist: Sanford Greene

Why It Rocks:
The art and the writing make this a very fun book. It’s funny, well-written, and isn’t your typical superhero book. Power Man and Iron Fist is completely different from any other Marvel Comics book out right now and its originality makes it stand out.

Veteran heroes Tony Stark (Iron Man), Vision, and Sam Wilson (Captain America) are back as Avengers and they are teaming up with newcomers Miles Morales (Spider-Man), Thor (Jane Foster), Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), and Sam Alexander (Nova).

Series: All New, All Different Avengers
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Adam Kubert

Why It Rocks:
Sure, Iron Man is cool, but it’s the new characters that make this book amazing. We are currently looking at what could be some great superheroes in the making and the future legends of Marvel.

3. Welcome to the Big Time, Miles Morales
Miles’ old universe has been destroyed and now he’s in the regular Marvel Universe. Can he hang now that he’s in the big leagues?

Series: Spider-Man
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Sara Pichelli

Why It Rocks:
I’ve said it at nausium that Miles Morales is the best new character to come out in years and this new series continues to nail my point home. Miles is a hero that everyone can relate to. Funny, smart (but not a genius), and just a kid trying to do what’s right without getting in trouble with his mom.

4. All New Old School X-Men
The original X-Men are still still saving lives and causing shenanigans in the present time.

New X-Men

Series: All New X-Men
Writer: Dennis Hopeless
Artist: Mark Bagley

Why It Rocks:
On top of the original group (Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, and Angel), you get the new Wolverine (formerly X23), Idie, and Genesis. The series is great and has a very Ultimate Spider-Man vibe to it (warm hearted for those who have never read Ultimate Spider-Man). Very innocent and funny.

5. Storm and the X-Men
The mutant race hasn’t been more hated and feared but now Storm leads a new team of X-Men and the entire into the future.

Extraordinary X-Men

Series: Extraordinary X-Men
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Humberto Ramos

Why It Rocks:
If you enjoyed the classic X-Men from the 80s and 90s when it was the X-Men against the world, then you’ll love this series. It’s a throwback to when people hated mutants and the X-Men still fought for the world anyway. Added bonus is we get a surly Old Man Logan and teenage Jean Grey.
